web internet marketing

Soon after, so did cellphones across Egypt, and then the Internet, as authorities cut communication in a last-ditch effort to halt the protests gripping the country.

The only trace the caller left was in cyberspace, where he had delivered a haunting message via Twitter: “Pray for #Egypt.”

Three days later in Washington, D.C., Nadine Wahab, an Egyptian émigré and media-relations professional, sat staring at her computer, hoping rumors of the caller’s disappearance weren’t true.

Suddenly his screen name flashed to life. She stared at the message.

“Admin 1 is missing,” it said. “This is Admin 2.”

Admin 1 was the caller, the anonymous administrator of a Facebook page that had played a crucial role in inspiring the uprising in Cairo. He had left Wahab with a contingency plan. If he disappeared, Wahab should wait until Feb. 8, two weeks from the date of the first protest, before she revealed his identity and sounded the alarm. At all costs, she was to maintain the appearance of normalcy on the page.

The contingency plan had made no mention of an Admin 2, and Wahab worried that the message might be a trap.

For the next week, Wahab and her small cadre of online associates became immersed in what seemed like a shadowy cyberthriller. At its center was a bespectacled techie named Wael Ghonim, a 30-year-old father of two, and Google’s head of marketing in the Middle East.

“My purpose,” wrote Wael Ghonim, “is to increase the bond between the people and the group through my unknown personality. This way we create an army of volunteers.”

Months of online correspondence between Ghonim and Wahab, parts of which were provided to Newsweek, as well as telephone and online conversations with the magazine, reveal a man who adopted a dead man’s identity to push for democracy, taking on a secret life that nearly consumed him.

Ghonim had received a master’s degree in marketing and finance from American University in Cairo and began working for Google in late 2008. In little more than a year, he was promoted to head of marketing for the Middle East and North Africa, a position based in Dubai, where he and his family moved into a house in one of the city’s affluent suburbs.

Ghonim and Wahab met electronically last spring, after Ghonim volunteered to run the Facebook fan page of Mohamed ElBaradei, the Egyptian Nobel Prize winner who had emerged as a key opposition leader; Wahab offered to help with PR. Ghonim had a strong tech background, having already founded several successful Web ventures. But it was his marketing skills that would fuel his transformation into Egypt’s most important cyberactivist.

Under Ghonim, ElBaradei’s page, which promoted democratic reform, grew rapidly. He surveyed its fans for input, pushing ideas like crowdsourced video Q&As. “Voting is the right way to represent people in a democratic way,” he wrote Wahab in May. “We use it even inside Google internally. Even when our CEO is live, if someone posts a tough question and others vote, he must answer it.”

But somehow the paper of record wrote what was supposed to be a definitive article on how the Obama Administration plans to fix the economy without once mentioning that part of the economy, housing, that has traditionally led recoveries but that, partly because of the obstinance of Obama’s economic team, continues to drag down the recovery.

Well, if the infighting was as bad as the ‘bad marriage’ metaphor implies, it would be a miracle if they accomplished much of anything.

Also, IMVHO, when Obama was elected, very few people on the left were realistic about how intransigent the GOP was going to be, nor how intransigent, and how blindly greedy the banksters were going to be. Until there are perp walks and a simplified banking system, this will continue.

OT alert!

klynn, recall our old threads about Yukos? Interesting development reported at CSM today:

Claims that the Khodorkovsky verdict has negatively affected Russia’s foreign investment standing appear to be contradicted by last week’s announcement of a $7.8-billion Arctic oil exploration deal, which was brokered by Putin, between Rosneft and the British petroleum giant BP.

A 2008 US diplomatic cable released Tuesday by WikiLeaks shows that BP has been courting Rosneft for years, despite that company’s close links to the Kremlin and deep involvement in seizing Khodorkovsky’s assets.

But if Medvedev wants to look like a viable candidate for reelection, he needs to do something to break decisively with Putin, his powerful predecessor and likely rival for the job, experts say.

Interesting, eh?

EW, apologies for the OT part of my comment.

Note: here is the economic Schedule for Week of January 16th.

Below is a summary of the previous week, mostly in graphs.

Retail Sales increased 0.6% in December

On a monthly basis, retail sales increased 0.6% from November to December(seasonally adjusted, after revisions), and sales were up 7.9% from December 2009.

Click on graphs for larger image in graph gallery.

This graph shows retail sales since 1992. This is monthly retail sales, seasonally adjusted (total and ex-gasoline). Retail sales are up 13.5% from the bottom, and now 0.2% above the pre-recession peak.

This was below expectations for a 0.8% increase. Retail sales ex-autos were up 0.5%; also below expectations of a 0.7% increase. Although slightly lower than expected, retail sales are now above the pre-recession peak in November 2007.

Industrial Production, Capacity Utilization increased in December

From the Fed: Industrial production and Capacity Utilization

Industrial production increased 0.8 percent in December after having risen 0.3 percent in November. ... The capacity utilization rate for total industry rose to 76.0 percent, a rate 4.6 percentage points below its average from 1972 to 2009.
This graph shows Capacity Utilization. This series is up 11.5% from the record low set in June 2009 (the series starts in 1967).

Capacity utilization at 76.0% is still far below normal - and well below the pre-recession levels of 81.2% in November 2007.

This was above consensus expectations of a 0.5% increase in Industrial Production, and an increase to 75.6% for Capacity Utilization.

Trade Deficit declined slightly in November

The trade deficit in November was $38.3 billion, down slightly from $38.4 billion in October This graph shows the monthly U.S. exports and imports in dollars through November 2010.

Imports have been mostly flat since May, and exports have started increasing again after the mid-year slowdown.

The petroleum deficit increased in November as import prices continued to rise - averaging $76.81 per barrel in November. Prices will be even higher in December. The deficit with China increased to $25.634 billion from $25,517 in October. Once again oil and China deficits are essentially the entire trade deficit (or even more).

CoreLogic: House Prices declined 1.6% in November

CoreLogic reported that house prices declined again in November. This graph shows the national CoreLogic HPI data since 1976. January 2000 = 100.

The index is down 5.07% over the last year, and off 30.9% from the peak.

The index is only 1.2% above the post-bubble low set in March 2009, and I expect to see a new post-bubble low for this index - possibly as early as next month or maybe in early 2011.

Ceridian-UCLA: Diesel Fuel index increased in December

Ceridian-UCLA reported "The Ceridian-UCLA Pulse of Commerce Index™ (PCI), a real-time measure of the flow of goods to U.S. factories, retailers and consumers, surged 2.4 percent in December and pushed the PCI above its previous 2010 peak established in May."

This graph shows the index since January 1999.

NFIB: Small Business Optimism index declined slightly in December

This graph shows the small business optimism index since 1986. The index decreased slightly to 92.6 in December from 93.2 in November.

According to the NFIB: "This marks the 36th month of Index readings in the recession level".

The decline this month was small, and in general this index has been improving - but very slowly.

Other Economic Stories ...

• From the Financial Times: Lisbon succeeds with debt auction

• From the NY Times: Portugal Bond Sale Succeeds Despite Budget Woes

• From the WSJ: Strong Demand at European Debt Auctions

• From the Association of American Railroads: AAR: Rail Traffic increased in December

• Fed's Beige Book: "Economic activity continued to expand moderately"

• From RealtyTrac: Record Foreclosure activity in 2010

• Unofficial Problem Bank list increases to 933 Institutions

Best wishes to all!

Almost everyone who spends time on the internet has at some point searched for ways to make money. The internet offers millions of different ways to make some extra cash, but almost all of these are either frauds or just not worth your time. I have tested many of these sites across the internet and can share with you the most common problems and the top site out there.

When searching for sites that can help you make money on the internet, you are going to see countless sites where you can buy "the secrets" to making money. These "secrets" will always have some posted retail value of hundreds of dollars, and then they will have the discounted price you can pay. I have seen these prices range anywhere from $19.95 to a few hundred dollars. If the front page of a site is similar to what I have just described, avoid it. Most of these sites simply will take your money and give you links to other sites where you again have to pay. Some of these sites may give you legitimate help on making money on the internet by offering you links to good sites, but it is information you could find just as easy by doing an internet search.

While there are many sites that offer you a way of making money, a large majority are a waste of time because they offer you a maximum opportunity of brining in a few cents each day. In order to cash out, you have to have some high number in your account, which to reach you would have to be fulfilling their offers every day over the course of years. I have tried many of these sites, and it is never worth it.

My favorite site for making money on the internet is CashCrate ( http://tinyurl.com/h6zkt ). The first day I signed up for CashCrate in May 2006, I spent about an hour completing free offers they had posted on their site. After that hour, I already had over $15 in my account.

CashCrate offers you the opportunity to make free money. For most of the offers on the site, you do not need to pay anything or even have a credit card. If you are willing to pay a little bit or use your credit card, there are always some great offers with much higher amounts. However, it is easy to make a good amount of money by just completing all of the free offers.

They also offer you a chance to make money back on online purchases. Simply click on their "Go Shopping" option, and you will be able to see a list of online merchants that offer you a certain percentage of your purchase back.

My favorite part about making money on the internet with CashCrate is the way they pay you. As long as you have the minimum payout (usually $5, sometimes they raise it to $10) they pay you each month by sending a check in the mail. Cashing out is free and automatic. While these numbers may sound high on some sites, I have never had a problem going over these numbers even in an hour of time. The site offers so many different free chances to make money that it should be easy for anyone to bring in the extra cash.

To sign-up for free for the site, click here to go to the homepage ( http://tinyurl.com/h6zkt ). Once at the homepage, you can register right there. After you are done registering, you can enter the members' area, and start making money!
